Sunseekers, pay attention: Tips to protect you from the harsh sun
Nice lubrication
There is a big misconception that you would not discolour when you lubricate with a high factor. This is certainly not the case. Especially in the first days, when your skin still has to get used to the sun, it is wise to apply a high factor. Once you get a sunburn, it is not only very painful but also the end of your tan. Be kind to your skin, it will last you a lifetime.
Drinking on
And no, we are not talking about a litre of beer. Alcohol actually drains your body of moisture and you need that moisture to cool your body. Make sure you stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, wearing light and airy clothes and also seek shade from time to time.
A hat is good
And a hat is fun. Protect your head and face from the bright sunlight. This will prevent sunstroke. If there is water nearby, wet your headgear and keep your head cool that way. Avoid the sun between twelve and three, especially the first days of the holiday. It's the perfect time to enjoy lunch or read a book quietly in the shade in front of your (glamping) tent.
Beware of medication
It seems so logical, yet this is something many people forget. Certain medications make you dehydrate faster than normal. This can be the case with antidepressants or medications that regulate your blood pressure, for example. These cause your body to cool down less quickly. If you take antibiotics, be careful: many antibiotics do not allow you to go out in the sun!
Heatstroke and its symptoms
In Croatia, the sun is a lot brighter than in the Netherlands. During your holiday, do you get a glowing sweaty skin, feel sick and sometimes have goose bumps, suffer from headaches, vomiting, dizziness, a fast heartbeat and are very weak, confused, pale and tired? Then you may have caught sunstroke after all. Make sure you avoid the sun and keep drinking well. If the symptoms get worse, call a doctor and make sure there is someone nearby who can take care of you. Prevention is better than cure, so take the right precautions so that sunstroke does not spoil your holiday.
