Anyone driving south by car cannot avoid a few refueling stops. The golden tip? Plan your stops wisely and go off the highway to refuel. Not only is it better for your wallet, but you sometimes also end up in surprisingly fun places that way! Where fuel prices in Germany and Austria often hit the jackpot, it pays to drive a bit further to the border of Slovenia.

Slovenia is known for having fuel prices on regular roads (outside the highway) that are often lower than in the surrounding countries. A small detour from the highway can save you a few euros per refueling stop. That's an extra ice cream for the kids at the campsite!

Once you arrive in Croatia, you'll notice that the holiday feeling starts right away, even at the gas station. The Croatian government often implements a policy where the prices for Eurosuper 95 and diesel are fixed for longer periods. This means you won't be affected by the daily fluctuations that we are used to in the Netherlands.

In general, prices in Croatia are much more favorable than ours. The great thing is that these prices are often equalized nationwide (with the exception of some highway stations), so you don't have to search far and wide for the cheapest pump. This leaves more budget for what really counts: enjoying the vacation.

The good news doesn't stop at the gas station. Although Croatia has become more modern with the introduction of the euro, daily life is still very reasonably priced. Whether you're sitting on a terrace in Poreč or getting an ice cream in the harbor of Rovinj: you still get real value for your money here. Fresh fish, local wines, and delicious pastas are abundantly available at prices we can often only dream of in the Netherlands.
